Here at WHIAAPI, we want to focus on the next generation and help build the pipeline of future public servants, entrepreneurs, and community leaders. Please join us for a week of virtual events designed to engage young AAPIs with federal government leaders as well as successful AAPIs in both the private and public sectors.  Come prepared to learn, participate by asking questions and take notes as our speakers share about resources and opportunities.

Along with the President’s Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, we hope to also encourage members in the AAPI community, who have succeeded themselves, to mentor the next generation.  We call this, “passing the torch”, which is one of our areas of focus.  Along with our federal partners, we will continue to work across the federal government and with the AAPI community to advance the economic empowerment and workforce development of AAPIs.

  1. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Monday, July 20, 2020 @4 PM EDT (10 AM HST, 1 PM PDT)

Special Guest Speaker: Secretary Elaine L. Chao, U.S. Department of Transportation, on “Making a Difference: Contributing to Society”

Panel Discussion on “Growing Your Network”: Panel discussion by successful AAPIs on the importance of mentorship and networking as well as sharing advice and tips for navigating the workplace, in both the public and private sectors.  Conversation will also highlight resources and organizations that support AAPI professionals.  A professional development workshop on maximizing working and learning from home will follow the panel discussion.

  1. COMMUNITY OUTREACH

Tuesday, July 21, 2020 @4 PM EDT (10 AM HST, 1 PM PDT)

AAPI Young Leaders Forum on anti-AAPI Bias and Hate

Summary: The Community Relations Service (CRS), a component of the US Department of Justice (DOJ), serves as “America’s Peacemaker” for communities in conflict by mediating disputes and enhancing community capacity to independently prevent and resolve future conflicts.  We begin this session with a presentation from DOJ CRS on their role and their response to anti-AAPI bias and hate crimes as well as ways to partner with local community to keep our communities safe.  The DOJ CRS presentation will be followed by a panel discussion with federal partners, including the Equal Employment and Opportunity Commission and the US Department of Education, as we address concerns around workplace discrimination and classroom bullying.

Roundtable Discussion with the President’s Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders: As AAPI young leaders, voice your concerns to the President’s Advisory Commission on AAPIs. Your input is critical as they advise the President and the Secretaries of Commerce and Transportation on issues that affect the AAPI community.

  1. PUBLIC SERVICE

Wednesday, July 22, 2020 @4 PM EDT (10 AM HST, 1 PM PDT)

Paths to Public Service

Summary: Through a series of interviews and conversations including opportunities for Q&A, we will introduce you to AAPIs in this Administration and throughout the federal government.  From the White House to federal agencies, AAPIs continue to grow in representation and influence.  Each of our speakers will share about their roles and the work that they do as well as discuss the importance of public service and what that means to each of them.  We conclude with a special presentation on Census 2020.

  1. ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Thursday, July 24, 2020 @4 PM EDT (10 AM HST, 1 PM PDT)
