Chicago Public Library's English Korean Bilingual Book Discussion: Crying in H Mart H 마트에서 울기

To celebrate cultural diversity, HWLC Popular Library will discuss Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner on May 8 (1-2:30PM) Harold Washington Library Center (400 S. State Street, Chicago IL 60605).

From the indie rockstar of Japanese Breakfast fame, and author of the viral 2018 New Yorker essay that shares the title of this book, an unflinching, powerful memoir about growing up Korean-American, losing her mother, and forging her own identity

5월 영어 한국어 이중언어 북클럽에서는 미셀 자우너의 <H 마트에서 울다> 를 읽고 토론합니다. 인디 팝 밴드 "재패니즈 브렉퍼스트"의 보컬이자 한국계 미국인인 미셸 자우너의 뭉클한 성장기를 담은 에세이입니다. 여느 미국 엄마들과는 다른 자신의 한국인 엄마를 이해할 수 없던 딸은 뮤지션의 길을 걸으며 엄마와 점점 더 멀어졌는데, 작가가 25세 때 엄마는 급작스레 암에 걸리고 투병 끝에 죽음에 이르고 맙니다. 어렸을 적부터 한국 문화를 접하게 해준 엄마를 떠나보내고 한국인으로서의 정체성마저 희미해져감을 느끼던 어느 날, 작가는 한인 마트에서 식재료를 사서 직접 요리해 먹다 엄마와의 생생한 추억을 되찾는데, 『H마트에서 울다』는 그로부터 얻은 위안과 자신만의 고유한 정체성에 대해 담담하게 적어나간 섬세하고 감동적인 에세이입니다.
