In Japan, New Year’s is the most auspicious and important event of the year. Various traditional events are held from the end of the year to welcome the gods who come once a year during the New Year period. With New Year’s decorations lined up all over the city and shrines crowded with New Year’s visitors, Japan is in a New Year’s mood, making it the most “Japanese” sight of the year. And each custom has an important meaning.
