Longing for spring in Chicago, Korean Cinema Chicago invites you to a heartwarming drama/comedy for the March Screening.🙂
Welcome to Dongmakgol(2005) is a surreal, quirky anti-war film adapted from Jang Jin's well-regarded play of the same name.
Set in Korea during the Korean War in 1950, soldiers from both the North and the South as well as an American pilot find themselves in an isolated village. Its residents largely unaware of the outside world including the raging war, the soldiers find themselves working together to help replenish the village's food storage after accidentally destroying it.
The playwright/filmmaker Jang Jin contributed to the contemporary Korean cinema with his unique "Jang Jin-ish" style of unconventional storylines, quirky characters, dry and subversive humor and a keen observation of the society. The film also features Joe Hisaishi as the music director, adding poignant and heartening mood to the film.
