MYTHS & LEGENDS

May is Asian Pacific American (APA) Heritage month! Celebrate with us ♥ And for those of you APA-identified performers out there, it's our month so we hope we see ALLLLLL of you on the mic ;)

Tell us about the myths of your people. Tell us about your legends, living or dead. What do we pass down from generation to generation? What do we keep alive in song and ritual and dance? What can folklore teach us about our cultures and histories? Or perhaps, instead, you have a myth to debunk, a legend to knock off its pedestal.

$5 suggested donation, but we won’t turn you away for lack of funds!

🎤Feature: Khoi The Poet 👀🔥🎤💜

Khoi the Poet is a Vietnamese American writer who specializes in poetry and nonfiction. He draws much of his inspiration from his experiences growing up as the child of refugees who fled the Fall of Saigon. His work tends to focus on issues pertaining to Asian Americans such as intergenerational trauma, immigration, generational tension, and cultural appropriation. As an Asian American, many of these hardships are glossed over by mainstream media and harmful stereotypes such as the model minority myth. He aims to use storytelling to bring these marginalized narratives into the mainstream.

To the Filipinx community, luya (ginger) has healing properties, just as it does in many other Asian cultures. Organised by multidisciplinary artists from the Chicago Asian diaspora, Luya is a welcoming space for poets of color to express themselves to an audience that understands where they’re coming from. Whether you're a spoken word veteran, or someone just starting to find your voice, we're here for you. Perform with or without music, alone or in a group, stick to the theme or don’t – all we ask is that you bring your whole self to the mic.

Luya doesn't tolerate harassment or fuckery of any kind, so don’t tempt the wrath of our ancestors. Really, don’t.
