Mandala Arts proudly presents Homeward, a transformative community dance workshop and performance project that brings together dancers of all levels—from community participants to seasoned professionals—to explore the profound themes of migration, identity, belonging, and the concept of “home.” Through the universal language of movement and storytelling, this project delves into the historical and emotional landscapes shaped by pivotal U.S. legislation: the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965. These legislative milestones not only reshaped American society but also opened doors for diverse communities to find a sense of belonging in the United States.
With movement direction and choreography by Kevin Iega Jeff and Pranita Nayar, Homeward blends contemporary modern, ballet, and African diasporic movement with pedestrian gesture and classical South Asian dance traditions. This integrative, collaborative approach weaves a rich tapestry of cultural expression, illuminating the diverse narratives that shape the American experience. The choreography becomes a vessel for both personal and collective stories, inviting audiences to reflect on the layered complexities of migration, identity, and belonging.
Homeward is more than a performance; it’s a community-driven initiative that empowers participants to share their own migration stories through dance. By fostering an inclusive environment, the project encourages dialogue and understanding across cultural lines, highlighting the shared human experiences that unite us all. Experience the power of dance as a medium for storytelling and social reflection. Be part of a performance that not only entertains but also educates and inspires.
