Event Date: Sep 28, 2025, 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM

Join us for the opening of Gyotaku: Impressions of the Sea, featuring works by Gyotaku Master Dwight Hwang, celebrated for preserving the authenticity and artistry of this traditional Japanese practice. On view from September 28 to October 5, 2025, the exhibition is organized by Robert Chenoweth in collaboration with the Heritage Museum of Asian Art and the Japanese Culture Center.

Gyotaku—meaning “fish impression”—originated in Japan’s Edo period as a way for fishermen to record their prized catches before photography. Over time, it evolved into a refined art form that captures the intricate details, textures, and beauty of marine life.

During the reception, enjoy an up-close look at Hwang’s masterful prints, which blend historical technique with contemporary artistry. Light refreshments will be served, and the artist’s process will be highlighted through conversation and interpretation.

Free with museum admission. All are welcome to celebrate this unique meeting of tradition, nature, and art. Light refreshment offered.
