Gold House, in partnership with the 2020 Census, Facebook, and Comcast NBCUniversal, cordially invites you to “Shaping Tomorrow’s Arts & Culture,” a virtual town hall. Join Asian and AAPI champions Michelle Lee (Allure), Padma Lakshmi (Taste the Nation), Prabal Gurung (Prabal Gurung), and Simu Liu (Kim’s Convenience and Marvel’s Shang-Chi & The Legend of Ten Rings) for an in-depth conversation on how the AAPI community can shape the arts and culture coming out of COVID-19, moderated by Gold House Chairman Bing Chen. This event will be live ASL interpreted.

- How will the effects of COVID-19 affect AAPI representation in entertainment?
- How can we ensure that AAPI stories continue to be shared meaningfully?
- What can be done to create cross-cultural camaraderie?

Tune in on Friday, May 29th at 2 p.m. PST / 5 p.m. EST at Facebook.com/GoldHouseCo to explore solutions and tangible next steps with our speakers on these questions and more.

Meet our Speakers:

Michelle Lee is the Editor-in-Chief of Allure. Since taking the helm in 2015, she has transformed Allure into an innovative, multi-faceted brand that champions diversity and challenges old-fashioned beauty standards. She was named Adweek’s Editor of the Year in 2017, while Allure was named Magazine of the Year for their groundbreaking covers, such as the July 2017 This Is American Beauty cover featuring model Halima Aden in a hijab and their September 2017 oath to ban the term “anti-aging” from their lexicon, which sparked global conversation about how we speak about aging. She’s been a vocal advocate for Asian-American representation, featuring stars like Gemma Chan and Naomi Osaka on Allure’s cover, and made history in June 2018 with a trailblazing cover featuring three Asian models.

Emmy-nominated Padma Lakshmi is internationally known as a food expert, model, actress and best-selling author, as well as the recipient of Variety’s Karma Award and the NECO Ellis Island Medal of Honor.  Lakshmi serves as host and executive producer of Bravo’s Emmy-winning series Top Chef, which garnered a 2019 Emmy nomination for Outstanding Reality-Competition Program, the show’s 13th consecutive Emmy nod. In 2020 Lakshmi will host and executive produce a new show for Hulu, marking the network’s expansion into original food programming. The new half-hour series will serve as a “living cookbook” focused on people and cultures which have contributed to American cuisine.

Prabal Gurung launched his eponymous collection in February 2009 with a philosophy encompassing modern luxury, indelible style and an astute sense of glamour. A focus on quality and innovation has placed Gurung at the forefront of American fashion with designs worn by leading ladies including First Lady Michelle Obama and The Duchess of Cambridge, to name a few. Gurung was the official 2013 designer collaborator for Target, launched a product collaboration with MAC Cosmetics in 2014, collaborated on a collection with TOMS to support Shikshya Foundation Nepal in 2016, launched a capsule with Lane Bryant in February 2017 and was named the Global Creative Director of Tasaki in September 2017. In November 2019, Gurung was named the first ever Honorary Designer of the National Portrait Gallery Celebration at the Smithsonian in Washington, DC, and published his first coffee table book.

Immigrating from China with his parents at the age of five, Simu Liu was pushed to excel academically from a young age. After graduating from the Ivey School of Business at Western University, he worked at a top accounting firm for nearly a year before corporate cutbacks suddenly left him without a job. Rather than jumping back into the world of accounting, Simu instead chose to pursue acting, something he had always had a keen interest for. Simu has since held recurring roles on CBC’s Kim’s Convenience, OMNI’s Blood and Water and NBC’s Taken, and has had guest roles on shows including Make it Pop, Nikita, Warehouse 13 and Beauty and the Beast. He has also been casted as the lead in Marvel Studios' upcoming superhero film, Shang-Chi & The Legend of Ten Rings.
