Filipinx Educators 4 Black Lives: How to Combat Anti-Blackness in Education

Audience: Filipino/a/x Americans in PreK-12 & Higher Education, but open to the broader Asian, Pacific Islander, Native Hawaiian, Desi American community.

Outcomes:

• Participants will build awareness on where and how anti-blackness shows up in our education system through lived-experiences and research.

• Participants will build community with Filipino/a/x American & adjacent Asian, Pacific Islander, Native Hawaiian, Desi American Educators (Teachers, Mid-Level Administration, and Senior Leaders) on a national level to discuss what does anti-racism and dismantling anti-blackness in our communities look like both short term and long term.

Moderator: Ron Raptalo (Principal @ Edgility Consulting, Coach, and Talent Shepherd with 15+ years of experience. He is an active member of the NYU alumni community for over 20 years, currently serving as an Officer Emeritus of the NYU Alumni Association. He is also an active member of the Education Leaders of Color and a 2009 Coro Leadership New York alumnus.

Panelists:

Dr. Liza A. Talusan | Liza (LIE-zuh) earned her Bachelor's degree in Psychology from Connecticut College, a Master's Degree in Student Personnel Administration from New York University; a certificate in Human Resources; a PhD in Higher Education from the University of Massachusetts Boston; and her certified coaching credentials from the Institute for Professional Excellence in Coaching. She serves as a Board Member of the YMCA in Massachusetts. Her scholarship has been published in peer reviewed journals, edited collections, online platforms, and she has been featured on a number of podcasts and interviews related to education, identity, and inclusion. She serves in a number of national organizations focused on education and equity, and she has consulted with well over 120 schools and organizations across the country.

Tony DelaRosa | Tony (Anthony) DelaRosa is an Anti-Bias & Anti-Racist Educator, Strategist, Motivational Speaker, Poet, and Cultural Broker. In 2013, he co-founded Pulse Poetry, a school elective course and after school direct service program which uses spoken word pedagogy and public speaking to empower youth voices in Indianapolis, Boston, and Miami. He has a Masters in Arts Education with a focus in Nonprofit Management from Harvard University. He serves on the Board of Directors for the Filipino Young Leaders Program (FYLPRO) to strengthen US to Philippine relations in Florida and more generally in the Southeast region of the US. His work has been featured in NPR, CNN, Hechinger Report, Harvard Ed Magazine, Hyphen Magazine, and elsewhere. He currently works at TFA Miami-Dade as a Teacher Leadership Coach, and Consultant with NYC Men’s Teach through the NYC Department of Education.

Dr. Karen Buenasvista Hanna | (Dr. Karen Buenavista Hanna is an Assistant Professor of Gender, Sexuality, and Intersectionality Studies at Connecticut College with almost 20 years of teaching experience. From 2003 to 2011, Dr. Hanna was a New York City public school teacher and library pre-GED instructor and community organizer working alongside Filipina/o/x immigrant youth and domestic workers. These experiences shape her approaches to research, pedagogy, and organizing, which are rooted in community-based praxis that challenges racial capitalism, heteropatriarchy, and empire in the attainment of dignity, democracy, and self-actualization for working people everywhere. Dr. Hanna's writing about transnational feminism, Filipina/o/x social movements and activism, pedagogy, and disability has appeared in numerous anthologies, journals, and magazines including Amerasia Journal, Frontiers: A Journal of Women Studies, American Quarterly, and Hyphen Magazine. She is fiercely devoted to building queer- and trans-inclusive spaces of solidarity and disability justice for BIPOC womxn and femmes.
