Rosaries and a garland of garlic can’t always save us from crimes of supernatural origin. Sometimes, the best thing we can do is to support someone who can fight malevolent mythical creatures so ready your popcorns because the Philippines’ first-ever Netflix anime is coming soon! Trese, created by Budjette Tan and Kajo Baldisimo, is a Filipino-made horror and crime comic. The story follows a mysterious detective that deals with crimes of supernatural origins occurring in the capital of the Philippines.

Trese has characters with deep stories, backgrounds, and creatures originating from Philippine folklore. There’s no denying the massive cult-following this series has amassed through the years. The comic has been adapted by Netflix, marking a milestone in Philippine anime history!

A star-studded Asian American cast has been selected to bring to life the characters of Trese, some of the stars are:

Shay Mitchell is playing the series protagonist Alexandra Trese, the cool Babaylan-Mandirigma of Manila. Mitchell is well known for her roles as Emily Fields in Pretty Little Liars and Peach Salinger in the psychological series thriller Netflix’s You.

Griffin Puatu plays The Kambal (Crispin and Basilio). The half-deity twin- brothers assisting Trese in her adventures and acts as her personal protectors. Griffin is a well-known Filipino- American voice actor based in California. He has lent his voice to several characters in TV, film, anime, and video games.

Nicole Scherzinger is the mother of Alexandra Trese and one of the Seven Seers, Miranda Trese. Scherzinger achieved mainstream recognition when she was cast as the lead singer of the Pussycat Dolls. She has since then ventured into television, appearing and winning Dancing with the Stars and serving as a judge on multiple talent shows. She has also lent her voice as the mother of Disney Princess Moana.

Manny Jacinto as Maliksi. The fastest and entertaining character in the comics, a trouble maker that often flirts with Trese. Jacinto is a Filipino-Canadian actor best known for his role as Jason Mendoza on the NBC sitcom The Good Place.

Eric Bauza as Nuno. The chocnut-loving creature in the Manhole, who has helped Trese in several tight situations in the comics.

The voice of Nuno Eric Bauza is a legend in the voice acting community. He has lent his voice to a multitude of cartoons. Some of his more notable roles are Stimpy from Rena and Stimpy and, Foop on The Fairly OddParents. He is also one of the current voices of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and so much more!

Matt Yang King voices Captain Guerrero, Dominic. One of the few humans who appears in the comics, he trusts and believes in Trese, making him one of the most trusted allies of the main protagonist. Matt is known for his recurring roles on Riverdale, Power, 24 Strong Medicine, and Numbers. He also lent his voice to Death & Robots, Studio Ghibli's 25th Anniversary, and Marvel Heroes, to name a few.

The Asian-American cast does not stop there! This Netflix series also brought the voice of fan-favorite Fire Nation Prince: Dante Basco, and Glee superstar Darren Chris.

This Netflix Anime series is surely making big splashes in the community, getting attention from the public with its eye-catching and riveting marketing gimmick in the Philippines over the past few days! Some creatures were seen vandalizing the series billboards. Well, Trese is now in our area!

Trese won the 29th National book award for Best Graphic Literature award back in 2010. Since then, it has been paving the way for the Philippines to be recognized worldwide. With its Netflix anime adaptation premiering soon on June 11, it will surely be one for the books. Join us in welcoming a new era with Trese who’s going to save us from dark supernatural forces!
