It is with the heaviest of hearts that we share the sudden passing of Michael C. Aguhar following a medical emergency on Friday, February 20, 2026. Originally from Houston, Michael became a beacon of light for so many of us in Chicago's organizing spaces. He built a home here not just for himself, but for every person he fought alongside and advocated for.
Michael was, at his core, a community builder. His footprints may end here, but we will make certain that the trail he blazed remains. The paths he forged will go further and create space for future generations of leaders, advocates, and community builders to walk through.
While his titles and accolades were many, it was the deep empathy behind his work that truly defined him. Whether he was helping establish FALA Chicago, fighting for domestic workers with the Alliance of Filipinos for Immigrant Rights and Empowerment, guiding programs at Crossroads Fund, or launching the Midwest Immigration Bond Fund, Michael’s motivation was always rooted in a profound love for marginalized people. He was a caring friend, a conscientious advocate, and a steadfast ally who believed deeply in a better, more just world.
Beyond the movements he helped shape, Michael's greatest devotion was to his family. He was a loving partner to Irina and a doting father to their toddler, Zoya. Our hearts break for them, and we send our deepest condolences as they navigate this unimaginable loss.
Support Michael’s Family
When a trailblazer leaves us so suddenly, it is up to the community he nurtured to step up and provide care. A GoFundMe has been created to support Irina and Zoya during this devastating time of transition.
We ask you to please consider making a contribution. Every donation helps lift the immediate burdens off his family and honors the beautiful legacy he leaves behind.
