For many, tutoring is a side job. For Adeel Afshar, it’s been a lifelong calling. “I’ve been tutoring pretty much all of my life,” he recalls. “When I was a freshman in high school, I remember tutoring the seniors. I just had a natural knack for academics and a love for learning.” That passion eventually grew into Afshar Academy, a private tutoring program designed to bring the best study habits, skills, and lessons from top universities and private high schools around the world to a wider audience.

Originally from Chicago, Adeel recently moved to Los Angeles, where he also teaches at the #2 academic high school in the United States. While Afshar Academy is headquartered in LA, its reach extends far beyond California. Thanks to virtual sessions, students across the country now have access to high-quality academic coaching tailored to their unique needs. “We’re based in Los Angeles, but we currently offer tutoring nationwide through online platforms,” he explains.

How it looks like: Normal Session and Exam Prep

At Afshar Academy, the focus isn’t just on test prep—it’s about nurturing students holistically. Sessions typically begin with a check-in, allowing students to share the highs and lows of their week. This sets the tone for trust and open communication. From there, students dive into their coursework or specific academic challenges. Midway through, there’s always a “brain break” to reset and keep energy levels high before wrapping up with more problem-solving and reflection.

When it comes to exam prep, Adeel shares one of his tried-and-true strategies for tackling SAT reading and writing multiple-choice questions. Called the “cover-up and predict” method, it encourages students to cover the answer choices, predict the best-fitting word themselves, and then select the closest match from the options. This approach sharpens critical thinking while reducing second-guessing.

Lessons That Go Beyond the Classroom

As president of ACE NextGen, he often draws parallels between academic skills and entrepreneurship. “The most salient takeaway is that it’s about showing up,” he says. “My students who show up consistently, week after week, are the ones who improve the most. The same is true in entrepreneurship.”

Over the years, many of his students have achieved extraordinary success—earning admission into Ivy League schools, Stanford, and securing nearly full-ride scholarships. These accomplishments demonstrate how hard work and smart strategies can open doors, both academically and professionally.

Advice for Future Leaders

When asked what advice he’d give to high school students preparing for the SAT while dreaming of entrepreneurship, Adeel highlights the importance of community. “The number one predictor of success, after having access to a tutor, is actually finding a group of three or four peers who will push you. Success comes not just from working hard alone, but from learning and growing together.”

At Afshar Academy, education isn’t just about passing exams—it’s about preparing for life. By combining academic excellence with lifelong habits, the academy empowers learners to succeed not only in school but also in their future careers and communities.
